「いっしょうもち」ってなに？　どこで買かえる？

「一升いっしょう」の「升しょう」とは重おもさの単位たんいで、約やく1.8kgです。

一升いっしょうのもち米ごめを蒸むして作つくったお餅もちを「一升餅いっしょうもち」といいます。

日本にほんでは、あかちゃんの1才さいのお誕生日たんじょうびのお祝いわいにこの「一升餅いっしょうもち」を背負せおわせてお祝いわいをします。

「いっしょう」には重おもさの「一升いっしょう」と、「一生いっしょう」（生うまれて死しぬまでのこと）の意味いみがあります。

一升餅いっしょうもちのお祝いわいをして、

• 一生健康いっしょうけんこうで暮くらせるように
• 一生食いっしょうたべ物ものに困こまらないように
• 一生幸いっしょうしあわせでいられるように　　　　と願ねがいます。

あかちゃんは1才頃さいごろから歩あるき始はじめることが多おおいです。早はやく家いえを離はなれないように
重おもたいお餅もちを背負せおわせる儀式ぎしきをした、という話はなしもあります。

一升餅いっしょうもちは、普通ふつうのスーパーマーケットなどでは売うっていません。

和菓子屋わがしやさんなどで予約よやくして買かうことができます。

おんらいんでも買かうことができます。

名前なまえを入いれてくれるところや、えらびとりのかーどもついているところがあります。

あとから食たべやすいように小ちいさく分わけたお餅もちを売うっているところもあります。

どうやるの？

地域ちいきによっていろいろな方法ほうほうがあります。

風呂敷ふろしきに一升餅いっしょうもちを包つつんで、それを背負せおわせるのが多おおいです。

一升餅いっしょうもちは重たいです。実際じっさいにはあかちゃんは背負せおえません。

大人おとなが下したから支ささえてあげて、危あぶなくないように気きをつけてくださいね！

「えらびとり」をやる地域ちいきもあります

一升餅いっしょうもちのお祝いわいとあわせて、「えらびとり」という儀式ぎしきをやる地域ちいきもあります。

あかちゃんにかーどを選えらばせます。

そのかーどで、将来何しょうらいなにになるかを占うらなうげーむのようなものです。

かーどとその意味いみは、こうです。

• そろばん（昔むかしの計算道具けいさんどうぐ） ... 計算けいさんが得意とくいな商売人しょうばいにん
• お財布さいふ ... お金かねもち
• 定規じょうぎ ... きちょうめんなしっかりもの
• ぼーる ... スポーツ選手せんしゅ

あかちゃんは利き手き　ての近ちかくにあるかーどを選えらびやすいです。

本気ほんきでやりたい人ひとは全すべてのかーどをあかちゃんから遠とおくに置おいたほうが良よいです !

服装ふくそうは？

大人おとなもあかちゃんも、普段ふだんの服ふくで大丈夫だいじょうぶです。

記念きねんに着物きもののようなろんぱーすで写真しゃしんをとるのも良よいですよ。

そして、ぱぱもままも、本当ほんとうにおめでとうございます。

あかちゃんが生うまれて、初はじめてのお誕生日たんじょうびを迎むかえる、本当ほんとうに嬉うれしい日ひですね。

The "Issho" is an old unit of weight and it is about 1.8kg.

Rice cakes made by steaming 1.8kg of glutinous rice is called "Issho-Mochi".

In Japan, we celebrate a baby's 1 year old birthday with a ceremony called "Issho-Mochi iwai"
(celebration with Issho-Mochi), where the baby carries this issho-mochi rice cake on their back.

The word "Issho" also stands for a "lifetime" (from birth to death).
So with this special celebration, we hope for the baby's lifetime

• good health
• guarantee of the food
• happiness.

It is also said that they started this ceremony to hope that the baby will not leave

home too early, since many babies start to walk around their first birthday. 

How Do We Do the Ceremony?

There are regional and various styles.  
In many of them, we will wrap the issho-mochi with the furoshiki fabric and 

put it on the baby's back.

In fact, the issho-mochi is so heavy that babies cannot carry it.

Make sure to do it safely - an adult needs to support them by holding mochi from underneath the furoshiki. 

Some Regions Do "Erabi-tori" (Choosing") Ceremony. 

Along with the celebration of issho-mochi, there are regions that  hold a ceremony called "Erabi-tori".

It is like a fortune tellling - we will put some cards with images and make the baby choose one of them.
Depending on the selected card, we would fortune-tell the future occupation of the baby.
Cards and their meanings are often:

• abacus ... a merchant who is good at math
• wallet ... a millionaire
• ruler ... an intelligent and smart person
• ball ... an athlete

The baby will choose a card that is close to his/her dominant hand.
So if you are very serious about fortune telling, make sure to put the cards some distance away from the baby! 

Be careful, issho-mochi is not sold at ordinary supermarkets.

You can order in advance and purchase them at a Japanese confectionary (wagashi-ya),

or also online.  
Many variations are available, such as the customizable ones with your baby's name,

and issho-mochi that are already cut into smaller pieces for easy eating later.

What to Wear?

Both adults and babies can wear ordinary clothes.

There are also a variety of kimono-like rompers.
